Join Chef Maya-Camille Broussard of Justice of the Pies for a 5-course tasting menu and collaborative dinner hosted by Hav+Mar's Chef de Cuisine Fariyal Abdullahi and inspired by Maya-Camille's cookbook Justice of the Pies: Sweet and Savory Pies, Quiches and Tarts + Inspirational Stories from Exceptional People. Dinner includes beverage pairings and a signed copy of her cookbook.
Pies: nostalgic and timeless
Pies, tarts, quiches, and more with a purpose
With more than 85 recipes for sweet and savory pies and other mouthwatering creations that put her social mission–based bakery on the map, celebrated Chicago baker Maya-Camille Broussard tells the stories of heroes outside the kitchen: luminaries who strive for social justice and equity, and shares recipes they’ve inspired.
Recipes include Broussard’s famous Salted Caramel Peach Pie and Brandied Banana Butterscotch Pie, as well as hearty renditions like the Fig + Pig Quiche and Roasted Brussels Sprouts + Cherry Tart.
What they’re saying about Justice of the Pies
"For Maya-Camille Broussard, pies and social justice go hand in hand. Broussard started her Chicago bakery, Justice of the Pies, as a way to honor her late father, who was a criminal defense attorney and self-described 'Pie Master.' In her book, she shares his voice, as well as those of her aunts and family friends as she describes how she uses her bakery to help fight food insecurity and build a purpose-driven life for herself and others. Recipes include desserts like her Salted Caramel Peach Pie and Coquito Chess Pie, as well as savory options like her Brazilian Fish Pot Pie and Fig & Pig Quiche. Along the way, she tells stories about her father, as well as profiles of other people who have fought for social justice. This is a book that tastes and feels good."
“…The cookbook is a mix of sweet and savory pies, tarts, and biscuits coupled with profiles of social activists like Tanya Lozano of Healthy Hood Chicago and Kleaver Cruz of the Black Joy Project. The pies are showstoppers, period. The Strawberry-Basil Key Lime Pie is electric green. The purple-dabbed, bacon-striped Fig and Pig Quiche could grace the cover of a magazine. I’m thinking of doing the Sweet Potato Praline Pie for Thanksgiving. The recipes are whimsical (chilaquiles quiche), glamorous (lavender lemon tart), and bring the party (tequila lime whoopie pies). And doesn’t that cover all the bases?”
